Can Your Child Really Trust You?

Do you really think your child can really trust what you say? Some parents say things and in our busy lives, we sometimes forget. A young child is very perceptive to what comes out of their parent’s mouths. So we must be careful if we are to continue to hold their trust and respect. I once told my son that there was nothing in the world he could not tell me, and nothing is more important than the people you care about.

One day while cleaning out a property, I came across a trunk filled with old comic books. Most of them were water damaged, so I trashed the bad ones and kept the goods, as some were in very good condition. After reading a few, I couldn’t resist, I noticed that most of them were from the 1970’s. I checked a website to see if they had any value, and to my surprise many were valuable. The first thing I thought about was saving them for my son to have when he got older and perhaps help pay for college. I was so excited to have a little pressure of some college bills off my back.

When I was much younger, I was an avid comic book reader. I wanted my son to share in some of my excitement. I gave them to him to read, and he loved them. I then reasoned that since they were really his, he could keep them and read them when he wanted. I forgot about them for a couple of months. One day I asked him about a particular issue, and was floored. He said he took them to school and gave them to his friends. I promptly shouted “how could you do that?” Boy, was I ever mad, until I saw the look on his face. There was such a look of embarrassment and disbelief. My son trusted me, and at that very moment, I failed him.

I’ve taught my son the importance of things that really matter. He is not materialistic, and the value of a comic book had no more value than friendship. Those comics will eventually whither and fall to pieces, he will have his friends for life. What a valuable lesson he taught me, more valuable than the comic books. I trust my son, I just hope he can still trust me?
